Making a Commitment to People and Communities

We are active contributors to open source software -- everything from Ubuntu to Python to OpenStack. But not only are we making numerous contributions of code, documentation, and money upstream, we're making it personal:


Some of us have been doing open source for a while, and we've had projects out in the wild for over a decade. Some of us DreamHost coders have started moving our good stuff under the company's open source umbrella -- in the spirit of jump-starting the open source culture inside DreamHost and in the hearts and minds of DreamHost fans.

Investing Our Time in Open Source Projects

From an open source contributing-and-consuming perspective, we're putting together some tools and features that our loyal customers want to use without having to go anywhere else. This means that it doesn't matter if our "competitors" see the source code we're working on, have copies of our hardware and software architecture diagrams, know what our plans are for the next year or two, etc.


That's because we're not in it for them -- we're in it for you :-) We want to create, contribute to, and maintain software that we love and know that you will too.

GitHub

DreamHost is happy to announce that it hosts its open source projects on GitHub so that community members may easily use the git distributed version control system as well as the social coding tools that GitHub provides.


Python

DreamHost supports many languages -- both internally and for its customers. However, Python has become of much greater importance with the entrance of DreamHost into the cloud space. Most of our open source projects are Python-based, and what's more, DreamHost is a Lanyard and Sprint Sponsor for PyCon 2012 in Santa Clara, CA.


Perl

Perl is one of the building blocks of DreamHost and helped it become what it is today -- a rockin' place to host your sites and blogs. DreamHost community members are dedicated to their Perl heritage and continue to write code in this ancient and mystic language.

Launchpad

In addition to hosting our code on GitHub, DreamHost is mirroring its code in bzr repositories on Launchpad. What's more, Launchpad's project management features -- such as blueprints, dependencies, and work items -- are being utilized for our community members' open source projects.


OpenStack

OpenStack is currently the open source project receiving the most of DreamHost's attention. We're committed to building world-class clouds on open source software, and OpenStack is enabling that for everyone. Our community members are committing patches, documentation, and process to the wider OpenStack community. DreamHost has also begun hosting OpenStack MeetUps and sponsoring such events as coding sprints for OpenStack at PyCon.


Twisted

Twisted is an async networking framework for building event driven tools, scripts, applications, and services in Python. The Twisted community attracts ingenious developers who enjoy turning problems on their head and discovering unique solutions to any difficulty. DreamHost is proud to sponsor the Twisted project and foster programming excellence as embodied by Twisted.
